We are Jonathan and Lisa Mayo. We have been missionaries with World Gospel Mission in Uganda for over 14 years. We first arrived in Uganda in February 1999. Before coming to Uganda we were missionaries in Tanzania. Before Tanzania, Lisa was a missionary in Bolivia and Jonathan was a missionary serving in Kenya for a little over two years.
We have two sons that have lived in Africa for most of their lives. Our oldest son, Jordan is 16 years old and was born while we were on a furlough. He was 6 weeks old when we returned to Tanzania. Ethan, our youngest son, is 14 and was born during our first term in Uganda.
Currently, Jonathan is the Country Director for WGM Uganda and the Coordinator of University Ministries in Africa. Lisa is the Secondary Principal at Heritage InternationalSchool. This Christian school was started through the prayers of 5 missionary ladies and has grown from a few MKs to over 320 students from 27 countries.
In Uganda we have primarily worked with Africa Gospel Church, the indigenous denomination that WGM helped to start in Africa. In Africa, WGM first began in Kenya in 1932 and now have over 1600 churches there. When we arrived in Uganda there were 2 Africa Gospel Churches. However, the Lord helped the Uganda team to begin a pastoral training program to equip Ugandans to pastor and plant churches. Now there are over 180 Africa Gospel Churches in Uganda!
The university ministries began on one campus here in Kampala ministering to up to 1000 students each week. There are now ministries on 7 campuses in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania and we have invitations to start ministries on more than 10 other Universities in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, DRC, Burundi, and South Sudan.
Although we have been missionaries for more than 2 decades, we have a passion to reach students with the life-changing message of the love of Jesus Christ. We are praying for a movement of students to reach the world for Christ.
We ask this prayer from Ephesians 6: 19-20 for us: “ Pray also for me, that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.”
