Matt and Joy Burke. We live and serve in Uganda with our two children, Judah (5) and Lily (3). I (Matt) grew up in rural South East Michigan in a large family (7 kids!). At the age of 8 I was convicted of my own sinfulness and inability to stand before God. Jesus met me in that condition and welcomed me into His family. My salvation experience was also my calling into mission, as my new heart sought to respond to a love that I had never known—a love for all peoples. At the same time, the Holy Spirit was at work on the other side of the world in the heart of a little girl who would become my wife. Joy was saved in Kenya, where her family served as missionaries.
It was Joy’s love for Africa that eventually led us to visit her home one summer while we were students at Asbury College. While I was committed to go wherever God directed, I never imagined that it would mean Africa. But over the summer God gave me a deep love for the land and the people of this amazing continent. The rest is history!
Now we are part of a mission family that desires to see people and their communities transformed by Jesus. We do this by training leaders who will reproduce themselves in others to carry out the work. It is immensely satisfying to see people encountering the living God through the stories found in His Word. There is no better story than God’s Story! For more information visit SimplyTheStory.org. We are excited to see God working in communities through the ministry of CHE (Community Health Evangelism/Empowerment). As people are introduced to God’s vision for healthy, vibrant communities they are discovering and using their own God-given abilities and resources to bring hope and wholeness.
What an amazing adventure! I cannot imagine anything better than being on mission with God in Africa.
